Pain Free Root Canals
Root canal problems usually develop due to cavities or fractures exposing the nerve tissue (the pulp) of the tooth. Bacteria move into the pulp tissue causing it to die. The bacteria continue moving through the pulp tissue into the bone surrounding the roots of the teeth.
Root canal treatment consists of making the tooth 100% numb (that’s the important part) so there is absolutely no pain during treatment. The actual treatment consists of removing the pulp tissue and bacteria then replacing it with a root canal filling to keep bacteria out of the tooth.
Endodontic Surgery
Routine root canal treatments can fail for a number of reasons. In some cases, the root canal treatment can be simply retreated by removing the old filing material and replacing it with a new root canal filling.
But in some cases, teeth require endodontic surgery. This involves, again gaining 100% numbing of the area. The surgery consists of lifting the gum tissue and removing the tip of the root(s) of the tooth. Then the pulp space at the end of the root tip is sealed with a filling (like putting a cork into the end of the root). A few sutures are placed to keep the gum tissue in its original location.
Dental Trauma
Trauma comes in a varying degree of severity. Teeth can be chipped, moved out of position or completely avulsed (knocked out).
If a tooth is avulsed, it is very important to get the tooth re-implanted less than one hour after the injury. And it is very important to keep the tooth moist. It is best if kept inside the patient’s mouth, next best is in a cup of milk, then water is better than it being dry.
Endodontists are trained to treat traumatic injuries, by re-implanting avulsed teeth, by medicating fractured teeth with exposed nerve tissue, by monitoring injuries to name a few forms of treatment.
